Get the Look 50s Glam

Ready to recreate the ultra-glam beauty look made famous by 1950s bombshell silver-screen sirens? Consider this your need-to-know guide for achieving a classic glossy red lip. There's no question that the 1950s era was the definition of glam. Women pulled out all the stops when it came to their makeup, from painting on cherry-red lips to wearing eyeliner, foundation and mascara. Thanks to Technicolor movies becoming the norm in the earlier part of the decade, women on the silver screen wore makeup that really popped. Along with red lipstick, cat-eye liquid eyeliner gained popularity during the decade as well, with women often wearing both styles together for an ultra-glam look. Women translated the looks that Hollywood starlets wore on the big screen to their beauty routines with glossy red lipstick and perfectly coiffed curls becoming the norm for every day. If you want to channel a vintage screen siren with your beauty look, the good news is that you only need a few key products. So grab your best red lipstick and follow this step-by-step guide to channel your inner 1950s pin-up style.

Steps for hair

Step 1:
This look is most easily created when you start with wet or damp hair. Using a blow-dryer and a round brush, dry sections of your hair until it’s smooth.

Step 2:
While any part works for this style, to most closely resemble the 1950s look, part your mane to the side using a fine-toothed comb and curl hair with a small curling iron. Use a curling iron under one inch as it’s best suited to get the desired look of bigger waves versus small, tight curls. Once hair is curled, pin each curl up with bobby pins or single bill clips. After hair is pinned, spritz with Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hair Spray and let the curls sit for about 20 minutes. This will help to give your curls shape and hold.

Step 3:
Unpin curls and run your fingers or a brush through your hair to give it the shape you want. Finish off your look with another spray of Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hair Spray.

Steps for makeup

Step 1:
Start with clean, bare eyelids. Using an eyeshadow brush, apply Infallible Paints Liquid Eyeshadow in Cool Ivory 316 to the centre of your eyelid and blend it outwards for an even application.

Step 2:
Make your eyes pop by applying Paradise Enchanted Shadow in Colour #8 to the crease of your lid. Use a fluffy blending brush to get a soft, diffused application.

Step 3:
Next up is eyeliner. This will help add definition to your eyes and enhance your lashes. Add a lash-hugging line to the base of your lashes with Infallible Paints Liquid Liner in Black Party 300. Toward the outer edge of your eyes, add a slick cat-eye flick to the end of the liner to open up your eyes.

Step 4:
Full, flirty lashes are an essential part of this makeup look. Apply a coat of Lash Paradise Primer to your upper lashes.

Step 5:
Layer one or two coats of Voluminous Original Mascara onto your upper and lower lashes.

Step 6:
To give your eyes a more sultry, defined look, add Infallible Long Wear Eye Pencil Eyeliner in Black to the waterline of your upper eyelid. To avoid your eyes watering during application, look downwards as you’re drawing in your waterline.

Step 7:
Using a large blush brush, bring a little colour to your face with a light dusting of Paradise Enchanted Blush in 193 Charming. Apply it to the apples of your cheeks and buff it in using a circular motion for a lifting effect.

Step 8:
The last step in this look is that gorgeous red lipstick. Using a flat lip brush, apply Colour Riche Shine Lipstick in Enamel Red. The flat edge of the brush helps to give you a crisp and defined lip line and accentuates the cupid’s bow. To boost the longevity of your bold lip, blot your pout with tissue and then go back in and apply a second coat of lipstick.

These steps are easy to follow and give you a guideline for how to get a 1950s-style beauty look but can be tweaked accordingly depending on how you want the final style to look. Swap out the ruby red lipstick for a dark red lipstick if you want a bolder lip, or thicken up your liquid eyeliner for a more dramatic eye look. Whether you follow these steps to the letter or improvise a little, you’re sure to look every inch the Hollywood starlet.

Building on the glam of the 1950s, the swinging '60s was just as stylish, with women swapping out their bold red lipstick for a more nude, neutral lip but adding a swipe of winged liner to their eyes. The cat-eye makeup of the time gave women a doe-eyed look, with the focus resting directly on the eyes and brows. Many actresses were known for their wide eyes and perfectly arched face-framing brows. Eyeshadows were kept neutral, and false lashes, which gained in popularity, were applied to both top and bottom lash lines. (Spoiler alert: nothing.) From burnt red to chocolate, vampy brown lipstick paired with neutral makeup makes for a memorable beauty look. The 1990s ushered in a whole new era of makeup: burgundy lipstick, smudged black eyeliner, matte skin and thin eyebrows were just a few key trends that emerged during the decade that put grunge on the map. In terms of beauty, compared to the excess of the 1980s—which included OTT glitter, bold colour and lots of blue eyeshadow—the '90s seemed to be considerably pared back, but that doesn't mean the decade didn't have its own distinct style and makeup looks. One trend in particular really defines the makeup of the decade: brown lipstick. From actresses on the silver screen to supermodels on the runway and women experimenting with their beauty looks daily, brown lipstick quickly became the trend. From warm red to taupes to beige, all tones of brown were the shade du jour for most of the decade. Often paired with a swipe of black liner, matte skin and sleek, shiny strands, the neutral lip was the focal point of any beauty look.
