How to Dye Grey Roots At Home

If you’ve never dyed your roots at home, it can seem a little daunting. You may find yourself wondering which product will work, how to find the right shade and what you should do if you’re covering grey roots. All of these concerns are incredibly common. But for most hair colours—ultra-light blond being the exception—it’s possible to touch up root regrowth without a lot of time, fuss or special skill. L’Oréal Paris Magic Root Rescue was formulated for exactly this purpose. Follow along to find your perfect Root Rescue shade and learn how to dye grey roots (or any roots!) right from home.

What is Magic Root Rescue?

A miracle treatment that disguises roots in just 10 minutes, L’Oréal Paris Magic Root Rescue is the handiest of at-home helpers when you can’t make it to the salon or don’t want to waste a whole box of home hair dye. It comes in 18 different hues ranging from Black and Natural Black (the darkest shades with a ranking of 2) to Light Blonde (the lightest shade with a ranking of 9) and can match your home or salon hair colour. It’s gentle and low in ammonia but still works for covering grey roots.

How do I find my shade match?

Each Magic Root Rescue box has general directions for finding the correct colour based on your current shade (e.g., 6A Light Ash Brown works for shades of light brown with cool undertones). If you’re working with L’Oréal Paris Excellence Crème, L’Oréal Paris Superior Preference or L’Oréal Paris Féria, here is a handy guide for discovering your perfect match:

How do I cover grey roots?

Whether you’re looking to hide grey hair or simply need to match the growth of your blond or brown hair to the rest of your coloured strands, L’Oréal Paris Magic Root Rescue can work for you. You will need one box of Magic Root Rescue, a comb and access to a shower or sink.

Step 1. Comb through dry hair.

Step 2. Put on the gloves included in your box and then pour the entire contents of the Magic Root Rescue colour gel into the developer bottle. Screw on the lid.

Step 3. Place your gloved fingertip over the nozzle and shake well until the mixture is completely blended.

Step 4. Trade the nozzle cap for the lid that has a soft brush tip. It allows for easy, mess-free application.

Step 5. Apply the dye to your roots—especially in the areas with the most visible grey hair. Make sure you saturate your roots with colour.

Step 6. Leave the formula to set for 10 minutes. Don’t forget to set a timer!

Step 7. Fully rinse your hair in the shower or a sink and air-dry or blow-dry.

Ta-da! You’ve found a root regrowth cure that’s fast, effective and requires zero help from the pros. Bust it out every few weeks when your grey roots start to get on your nerves (or you simply want a touch-up because smooth, seamless hair gives you a mood boost).
