Easy tips

We all want it: fresh, dewy, glowing skin. But as women age—and go through menopause—that goal can seem harder and harder to achieve. The fact is, as estrogen levels decrease, so does cellular turnover, collagen production, elasticity and skin thickness. You may even notice that your skin starts to look dull and lifeless. But as Dame Helen Mirren (age 73!) proves with her radiant complexion, estrogen levels aren’t the only factors at play when it comes to a glowing face. If you’ve noticed loss of radiance, these five tips should help you get back on track.

1. Remove your makeup before bed
We’ve all done it—been too tired to take off our makeup and fallen straight into bed. But if you regularly skip cleansing, your pores can become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells, meaning your face may become dull or acne-prone (even after menopause). Try L’Oréal Age Perfect Anti-Fatigue Cleansing Lotion, which is enriched with vitamin C and magnesium to eliminate impurities and re-energize your skin without drying it out. This quick skin-care step will give your face room to breathe and allow serums and moisturizers to penetrate and work their magic.

2. Exfoliate on the regular
Gentle manual exfoliation (with granules or a wash cloth) or chemical exfoliation (with acids) helps slough off dead skin cells and encourage the turnover of shiny new ones. That’s why it’s a good idea to incorporate exfoliation into your skin-care routine as a separate step a few times per week—or choose a moisturizing cream that does it for you. L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Cell Renewal Rosy Tone Moisturizer uses LHA (Lipohydroxy Acid) to lightly exfoliate, plus Imperial Peony Extracts to give your complexion a fresh, rosy glow.

3. Book in beauty sleep
You may have been able to get away with minimal hours of sleep as a teen because your skin was working at peak performance, but now the lack of zzzs are starting to show. Since your skin renews itself in the wee hours of the morning when your body is at rest, you need to actually get those hours of beauty sleep in order for your body to repair damage and create fresh cells—and a night cream can help. L'Oréal Paris Age Perfect Cell Renewal Night Cream takes advantage of those prime hours to pamper and hydrate dry, tired skin, all the while restoring resilience and radiance.

4. Skip sweets
So you love donuts, soft drinks and chocolate, so what? We’re not here to judge, but all that sugar could be thwarting your skin goals by causing the breakdown of collagen and creating excess testosterone, which results in lacklustre skin, dark circles and large pores. If you’re serious about recouping a bit of your natural glow, cut down on sweets whenever possible and drink lots of water instead.

5. Make an illuminator your best friend
There’s no harm in giving your skin a bit of a boost, and that’s where a touch of illuminator goes a long way. If your skin is dry—as tends to be common with post-menopausal complexions—choose a liquid, gel or cream and dab it onto the high planes of your face including the cheekbones, brow bones and bridge of the nose to give yourself a bit of faux glow that everyone will think is all you.

Don’t let menopause steal your radiance. Follow these easy suggestions and you’ll have people asking, “What’s your secret?”
