Get the Look: French Braid 101

Make sure your hair is well-brushed and tangle-free. This will ensure that hair glides smoothly as you are braiding.

Separate a portion of hair from the front of your hairline or behind bangs so that you're left with a small one-inch pulled-back poneytail.

Divide this section into three equal pieces, with one section in one hand, one section in another hand, and the middle section lying smooth against the back of your head.

Now, wrap your left thumb around the entire left section so that your palm is facing front and your fingers are sticking straight up. Do the same on your right side, while letting the middle section lie.

Bring the hair in your right hand over the middle section and hook it with your left index finger.

With your right thumb, pull some hair (about an inch wide) from the hairline on the right side of your head straight across the side of your head as if you were doing another pullback. Bring this section of newly pulled-back hair between your left index finger and thumb. Make sure the hair you just collected lays smooth against your head.

Collect the loose middle section with your right hand and hold it tight.

Drop the hair you just collected in your left hand so it now lies smooth against the middle back of your head.

Bring your right index finger over the middle section and hook the section of hair that is in your left fist.

Pull it over gently and make sure you have a firm grasp on your braid sections in your right hand.

With your left thumb, pull some hair (about an inch wide) from the hairline on the left side of your head straight across the side of your head as you are doing another pullback. Bring this new section of pulled-back hair between your right index finger and thumb. Make sure the hair you just collected lays smooth against your head.

Collect the loose middle section with the left hand and pull it tight. Turn the fist so that your fingers face your scalp.

Extend your left index finger to hook around the hair that’s in the right fist.

Continue in this way until you have a French braid at the nape of your neck. From here, braid the rest of your hair, right hand over left, and secure the base with a tie.

Finish with Studio Line Strong Suit Design Finishing Spray for a beautiful, luminous finish.
