FAQ

Are your products safe for those with a medical condition?

While our products go through extensive testing to provide the best and safest possible products for our consumers, even the safest products may contain ingredients to which a few individuals may be sensitive. Discuss your condition with your doctor and follow his or her advice regarding product usage.

Are your products safe to use during pregnancy or when nursing?

When used properly, L’Oréal products are safe during pregnancy and while nursing.  Although there are no specific safety tests for products during pregnancy and nursing, there is a substantial amount of information supporting the safety of products when used as directed.

If you have any concerns, L’Oréal recommends that you consult your doctor.

Can I order your products directly?

L’Oréal Paris only sells products to mass market retailers, drugstores, supermarkets.

Can I request an ingredient list?

Yes, but first check the product packaging.  All of the ingredients used in a product are listed on the package or the label of the product itself.  For products too small to accommodate the list, a separate ingredient list is available on the display unit in the store for your convenience.   L’Oréal Paris can also send or email an ingredient list by request.

Since some ingredients are known by more than one name, L’Oréal Paris uses the standard industry names for ingredients. These ingredients are Health Canada recognized names.

Does L'Oréal Paris test on animals?

L'Oréal absolutely supports the objective of the elimination of laboratory animal testing.
For the past 25 years, L'Oréal has been actively involved and has made major contributions to the research, development, validation and acceptance of alternative non-animal strategies.

L'Oréal is an active member of the European Commission and industry-driven European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA) and together with our competitors within the European cosmetics association COLIPA, L'Oréal is committed to a large research programme both in view of the 2009 and 2013 deadlines and to keep on doing whatever possible, in its field of experience, in order to promote this programme.
Progress is monitored each year by the European Commission and all efforts are ongoing in view of these deadlines.

For the past 20 years, L'Oréal has invested close to € 30million euros per year on alternative methods of research and development. In February 2006, L'Oréal has underlined its commitment to the further development of alternative methods for safety evaluation with the acquisition by Episkin, a subsidiary of the L'Oréal group that is dedicated to the development of reconstructed skin, of SkinEthic (expert in the field of tissue engineering). The complementary nature of Episkin and SkinEthic allows L'Oréal to further advance its commitment to the development of alternative methods for the safety assessment of product ingredients with the aim of sharing out with all the industries concerned, including our competitors. In April 2007, ECVAM (European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods) announced the validation of an ‘in vitro’ test as a full replacement method for assessing the skin-irritancy potential of chemicals. This test employs the L’Oréal Episkin model; a human epidermis reconstructed on collagen. This work has so far contributed to L’Oréal’s ability to end animal tests on all finished products in 1989 and makes us fully confident to reach the objectives drawn by the deadlines of 2009.

How do I get samples of your products?

Unless there is a special promotion, L’Oréal Paris does not have samples available to send to you.  Most companies that carry L’Oréal Paris products offer displays that help you learn more about the products in person.

Is L’Oréal Paris product packaging recyclable?

Most L’Oréal Paris product packaging is recyclable.  Look for the recycling codes and chasing arrow symbol on the bottom of the bottles to know for sure.  Check with your municipality if you have any additional questions regarding recycling policies in your area.

What is the pH of your products?

How do I use lipcolour to perfect my lip shape?

Lipcolour, lip liner and lip gloss, when used strategically, can work wonders to give you the illusion of a more perfect pout.  Follow these little hints to get your desired effect:

To downplay full lips: to de-emphasize full lips, select a neutral shade with a semi-matte or matte finish (as shine often adds emphasis to lips!).  Use a lip liner shade that matches your lipcolour, and line lips just inside your natural lip line.  Fill in lips with your selected lipcolour.

To play up thin lips: use a lipliner in a neutral shade and trace along the outer edge of your natural lip line.  Fill in lips using a lipcolour in a medium or light shade (as very dark colours can sometimes make thin lips appear smaller), blending lipcolour into the lipliner line you’ve just drawn.  Apply a shimmery lipgloss to just the center of your bottom lip to make lips appear fuller and more pouty.

What is the best way to keep the enamel and brush clean and easy to use?

We have found it helpful to wipe the neck of the bottle clean after each use.  If nail enamel dries on the neck of the bottle around the brush, the bottle cannot be closed properly.  This can cause the brush to detach from the cap. Keep the cap tightly closed and shake well before use. Never add water or any other substance into the bottle.

After colouring my hair, it has uneven, spotty colour. What happened and how do I correct my colour?

For a more precise answers we invite you to contact the consumer care center at 1-888-4-LOREAL.

After colouring my hair, it is too dark. What happened, and how do I correct my colour?

Different reasons may explain why the result is too dark. 1) You may have chosen a shade that’s too dark.  Over time, as you shampoo your hair, the color will gradually fade and become lighter.  If you want to recolor your hair, you should wait until the color has faded significantly before you color again. Otherwise, you may get a result that’s even darker, even if you use a lighter shade. 2) Hair that is continuously treated with colour and/or permanent waves can become porous.  Excessive absorption may result, producing more intense colour.  Keep in mind that your colour will lighten gradually as you shampoo your hair. For this, select a shampoo that is not specifically formulated to preserve colour.  If the colour fades successfully, you can select a shade that is one level lighter the following month.  Should you wish to lighten drastically; a colour removal will be required to prepare the hair to receive the lighter shade.  For personalized advice, we invite you to contact our Consumer Care Center toll-free at: 1.888.4LOREAL (1.888.456.7325).

After colouring my hair, it is too gray, ashy, green or blue. What happened, and how do I correct my colour?

After colouring my hair, it is too pink or purple. What happened and how do I correct my colour?

For a more precise answers we invite you to contact the consumer care center at 1-888-4-LOREAL.

After colouring my hair, it is too red, orange, brassy or gold. What happened, and how do I correct my colour?

When you lighten your natural colour, the warm gold and red pigments in your hair are revealed.  With most single process permanent haircolours, you can lighten your natural hair colour only up to two levels without exposing these warm tones. If your hair is too red or orange, you can try colouring with a shade slightly darker than the one you used (closer to your natural colour) in order to tone down the red or orange.  If you were attempting to significantly lighten your hair and the result is too brassy or gold, you may need to process your hair again to go lighter.  If such is the case, please visit the Can I Help You? section of our website for personalized, expert advice.  Here, our expert colourist, Christophe Robin will guide you to the products and techniques that will help you achieve your desired result. Should you have more questions, please do not hesitate to contact our haircolour experts at 1.888.4LOREAL

After colouring my hair, it looks washed out or faded. What happened and how do I correct my colour?

Many things including repeated shampoos, exposure to sun, pollution and frequent styling can all cause color to fade.  When color has already faded, you will need to recolor.  To achieve the most perfect touch up to your color, be sure to choose the L’Oréal Paris haircolor that you used previously.  After coloring, do not wash hair for a few days to avoid stripping your color.  Use Vive Pro Colour-Vive shampoos and conditioners to nourish your hair and protect your color.  For more tips on care for color-treated hair, go to the Hair Care section where you can also look for your Pro-Scription. For personalized, expert haircolor advice, please visit the Can I Help You? section of our website.

After colouring my hair, my gray hair was not covered. What happened and how do I correct my colour?

Permanent haircolouring is ideal when grey coverage is a concern as it is the only haircolour category that can offer up to 100% grey coverage.  If your grey hair is resistant to colour, you will find that Excellence Creme offers the best possible grey coverage.  Be sure to apply to the resistant grey first; this will allow the product to sit on the grey for a longer period of time.  Some products recommend extra timing on grey hair; leave it on for the maximum recommended processing time.  Shade selection is important; some shades offer better coverage than others.  Warm tones such as gold or neutral shades are ideal for grey coverage.  Cool shades such as ash or pearl tend to make the hair look dull and greyer.  Avoid very, extra or ultra light blonde shades as their focus is on lightening and not on colour deposit which is essential for grey coverage.  Deeper shades will provide better grey coverage than lighter ones.    Keep away from very intense shades; these tend to appear much too vibrant and artificial looking on the grey.  Should you have more questions, please do not hesitate to contact our haircolour experts at 1-888-4-LOREAL.

After colouring my hair, there was no change in my hair colour. What happened and how do I correct my colour?

There may be various reasons for why your colour does not show.  You may have chosen a color that is very close to your natural color.  If you want to recolor your hair, wait 48 hours and select a darker shade, if that is what you are looking for. For a lighter color, a two step process might be required. For personalized, expert haircolor advice, please visit the Can I help you? section of our website. Should you have more questions, please do not hesitate to contact our haircolour experts at 1-888-4-LOREAL.

After you color your hair, it’s best to wait a few days before you shampoo it, unless the directions state otherwise.  This will help set the color, and prevent premature fading.  After coloring, rinse your hair with cool water until the water runs clear and then apply a deep conditioner to help seal in your color and shine.

How will I know the results of L’Oréal Paris hair colour on my natural hair colour?

The end result of coloring your hair is determined by a combination of your starting color, the condition of your hair, the texture of your hair, any previous treatments (perm, straightener, etc.) and the color you are adding. Your color may not turn out exactly like the model’s on the box because you may have had a different starting point.

Get an initial idea from the haircolour packages and swatches.  Always be sure however, to read the information on the box to understand the predicted results.  For a more accurate preview of the haircolor on your hair, do a strand test by coloring a small section of hair as described in the instruction leaflet.
